Some Electrical Thoughts
1. Your alternator is not a
battery charger. ---
It is designed to maintain
only.
Do not charge your run down or
dead
battery with your
alternator.
Eventually you will fry your
alternator.
Buy a Charger and use it.
2. Always put a fuse
in the
line to any new accessory.
Size
the fuse correctly. (get
a book)
Place it at the beginning
of
the the new circuit.
( Closest to the source of
current;
You can use one to protect the
circuit and one of lesser
amperage to protect an
accessory at the end.)
Use looms,
grommets and ties.
3. Solder Solder Solder.
If you aren't confident get that
confidence.
Practice. Even if you crimp your terminals
Solder them.

4. Watch your wire sizes.
Be sure that you double check,
and use one size larger wire
than is recommended.
( Smaller number ) always
stranded.
Remember codes are only the
minimum.
5. Always use 6 volt battery
cables. They're twice the size
of 12 volt cables, much
healthier for your system.
6. Periodically check and clean
your bonding straps that
ground body to frame, as well
as Battery Terminals.
7. Always watch your voltmeter
or ammeter dash gauge.
If it jumps erratically it can
be a poor connection,
a bad alternator bearing, belt,
or an electrical
problem inside the alternator
etc. If the needle
doesn't move as you turn on
accessories,
fan, lights etc.,
Investigate early.
8. Check your connections
for tightness
especially the
Alternator
and associated charging terminals.
Look
for signs of
overheating. Trust your sense
of smell.
9. Learn
and understand the use of relays.
It's worth
the
effort.
10. Shrink
tube and a little Bic lighter make a neat job.
Keep
it tight and right.
Remember
we're talking fire prevention !
